Yahoo! Sports reports the New Orleans Hornets are expected to change their nickname to the Pelicans, Louisiana’s state bird, as early as the 2013-14 season. This comes days after Bobcats owner Michael Jordan said he was open to brining the Hornets name back to Charlotte.
According to Yahoo! Sports:
The New Orleans Hornets are expected to change their nickname to the Pelicans as early as the 2013-14 season, numerous sources told Yahoo! Sports.
The Hornets planned to change their nickname since Tom Benson, owner of the New Orleans Saints, purchased the team on April 14. Benson also owns the rights to the nickname Pelicans.
The Hornets also considered the nicknames Krewe (groups of costumed paraders in the annual Mardi Gras carnival in New Orleans) and Brass.
Louisiana is the Pelican State. The brown pelican is the state bird and appears on the state flag and seal, and official state painting.

Hornets guard Eric Gordon gave an update on his ailing knee at the Hornets vs. Clippers game in LA on Monday night saying that while it is progressing, there is still no timetable for a return. Asked to elaborate more on his condition, Gordon compared his woes to that of Pacers forward, Danny Granger, and Sixers center, Andrew Bynum – but with a shorter rehab process.
According to the Times-Picayune:
“It’s getting better; progress is getting better, but there’s no straight-up timetable,” Gordon said. “The main thing is things have been getting better. They’ve got a plan for me and the main thing is the pain level is going down. Just trying to get back to 100 percent before I get back out there playing.”
Asked what the physician in Chicago determined was wrong with the knee, which was scoped Feb. 14 to clean out loose cartilage particles, Gordon said: “It’s almost like a disorder. There was a little bit of a bone bruise, and, you know, kind of like some of these other guys like (Andrew) Bynum and (Danny) Granger. Luckily my process will be shorter than that.”
