Jerry Buss was remembered fondly by those who knew him best on Thursday during a memorial service held at LA’s Nokia Theatre. Magic Johnson, Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal, Phil Jackson and more celebrated Buss’ life by sharing memories with the crowd of mourners in attendance.
It was Jackson’s first appearance around the Lakers since retiring 2 years ago. “Dr. Buss said, ‘Kobe, if I had a diamond of great value, four karats, would I give up that diamond for four diamonds of one karat? No…A trade cannot match what you bring to this team. “[Buss] was a diamond of great value,” remembered the 5x Laker champion head coach.
“We are playing for something bigger than ourselves, bigger than a single season, playing for the memory of a great man, Dr. Jerry Buss,” Kobe Bryant said to the crowd and his teammates.
Perhaps most telling of the kind of man Dr. Jerry Buss was, were the words spoken from the heart of Magic Johnson:
“He would call me all the time, ‘Are you taking your meds? Are you doing what you’re supposed to do?’ That’s when I knew this man loved me and cared about of me outside of winning championships, outside of making no-look passes.”
