Pau Gasol Gets Benched In The 4th Quarter, Wants More Touches

As the Lakers dropped their second consecutive game, keeping them winless on the road (0-4), Pau Gasol was noticeably absent for the entire fourth quarter vs the Grizzlies on Friday night.  Kobe Bryant called Gasol out for “coasting” throughout the loss to the Kings on Wednesday, and Mike D’Antoni mirrored those sentiments by sending his starter to the pine.  D’Antoni’s flat out reasoning for his decision was because he “wanted to win [the] game”.  Ouch. Gasol, who said the benching was a career first, finished with 6 points and 4 rebounds and plea to be featured more in the offense.

According to Mark Medina:

Gasol’s play, a six point effort on three of eight shooting and four rebounds, irked Lakers coach Mike D’Antoni so much that he benched him for the entire fourth quarter.

“I was thinking,” D’Antoni said, ‘Well I’d like to win this game.’”

Gasol also argued the Lakers could feature him better.

“All my looks are jump shots,” Gasol said. “I would like to see something to the basket and not just something rolling when Dwight is there.”
